2008-2009

Why is the library so important?

The library is important because students need to learn information literacy! Research assignments that are co-taught with the librarian incorporate essential study skills that help students access, evaluate, and use information more effectively. This increases academic efficiency and student achievement by teaching kids how to learn (process) as well as what to learn (subject content).

The Age of Information & Technology can be distracting and overwhelming. To produce quality work in today's world, students must know how to choose the best sources, build effective searches, evaluate results, organize tasks, synthesize ideas, and stay focused on their academic goals.

This year, the Collins Library is increasing information literacy among students by teaching more library classes than ever. The library hosts an average of 20 classes per week, and hundreds of students use the library each day on campus and from home.

To attract more classes and more students, the library has three main goals. Achieving these goals requires financial support:

  • Expand the print and online collections

  • Teach the community to effectively use these resources by integrating classroom assignments, study skills, technology, and academic resources

  • Provide individual service to students, faculty, and parents to improve their knowledge and use of the library

Please consider an Annual Fund donation to the Collins Library. Click here to donate online or visit our donations page to learn more about the library's wish list.
Thank you for investing in student achievement!

Net Library is a database of free unabridged audio books and ebooks available to public library patrons through the Santa Barbara Public Library System.

To open a personal account:

  • Log in to view your library record
  • Enter the barcode number on the back of your library card and your PIN (if you have one) in the appropriate boxes.
  • If you do not have a PIN, leave that box blank and click submit. The subsequent page will help you to create one.
  • Once you are inside your library account, choose to set up a Net Library Account.
  • Choose Santa Barbara Public Library (or your home system).
  • Search for a book & choose download for audio books or view for ebooks.
  • To download audiobooks, choose the quality of audio file.
  • If you do not have a username and password, click "create a free account" on the right hand side of the page.
  • Once you have a username and password, you can log on from the Net Library home page for future use.

Net Library audiobooks can be played on any desktop or portable device supporting Windows Media Player version 9.0 and above. Unfortunately, this software is not Macintosh or iPod compatible.

Book Donations: Used books (quality fiction and non-fiction) and audio-video materials (including vinyl records) are always welcome at the Collins Library. Donations are used to supplement the library's holdings and create reading shelves for students in the dormitories. Left over books are donated to the St. Mark's book fair, which benefits the Solvang Branch Library.
