Learning Skills Accommodations at DunnDunn School agrees with the position taken by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and makes accommodations for students with disabilities when it is appropriate. The Director of the Learning Skills (LS) program, the Learning Skills faculty, and the Director of the Upper School determine the appropriateness of accommodations made. It is our goal to ensure that LS students receive a genuine college preparatory education, and to that end we do not make any accommodations that alter the content of course material. Students in the Learning Skills program are required to take all of the college preparatory courses that non-LS students take. Accommodations that we routinely make include extended time on tests and major quizzes and the use of technology including, but not limited to, word processors, spell checkers, calculators, and books on tape. In addition all Dunn faculty are aware of which students are LS students, and are required to accommodate specific needs of these students in the classroom and in their teaching methods. Accommodations that we do not make include altering the amount or content of subject material that LS students need to learn, altering the length of written assignments, changing testing formats, and waiving course requirements. The emphasis of the Learning Skills program is on "Managing by Profile". In effect teachers help to develop highly individualized learning and test taking strategies with each LS student, recording and naming these, and reviewing and using these as and when necessary. To this effect, each LS student has his/her own binder, which over the four years records learning strategies, problem solving techniques, achievements and successes among other things. Students are able to take their LS binder with them to university in the hope that it will continue to serve as a learning tool in the future. |
