College Counseling

Dunn’s commitment to nurturing each student’s talents and interests is at the core of its college counseling program. Starting in ninth grade, each student, together with his or her advisor, begins to identify these qualities. Ongoing conferences with the student, parents and teachers gradually clarify the student’s unique strengths and passions. With time, the student achieves a sense of self grounded in reality.

This awareness is the foundation for the student’s college search. It allows each student to identify the institutions that will provide him or her with the best learning environment and the best setting for continued personal growth. Because Dunn works with a range of learners, we recognize that the best fit for one student may not be a suitable match for another. We share this understanding with parents and students.

Our goal is to empower each student to identify the best “right match” for him or her. We provide comprehensive support but believe the student must own the process. Going to college marks a student’s transition into adulthood and separation from family. Parental involvement is encouraged as long as the student plots the course.

The College Counseling Office has a talented staff to help students navigate the college search and application process. Associate Head of External Affairs Aaron Dorlarque is the Director of College Counseling. College Counselor and Registrar Christy Davidge is assisted by Jane Politte. Matt Struckmeyer, Chair of the English Department, guides students in preparing their personal statements and short response essays.

If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Mr. Dorlarque at adorlarque@dunnschool.org or Ms. Davidge at cdavidge@dunnschool.org or call the Dunn School office at (805) 688-6471.
