Welcome
Every summer, Dunn School offers a wide variety of academic, enrichment and recreational programs for both children and adults on campus.
Our programs lend themselves to a summer experience that children can grow with. Starting at 2 or 3 years old and moving into their Middle and High School years, children can participate in programs that are developmentally challenging, nurture their self-image, assist them in making new friends and instill leadership opportunities.
Dunn's Summer Programs are committed to:
• Developing each individual's personal potential
• Building self confidence and character
• Fostering individual and collective excellence
The Summer program has a remarkable reputation for excellence. Each summer we serve over 350 families in our Traditional Day Camp, Learn to Swim program, Academic classes and varied Enrichment offerings. As a community leader, Dunn strives to provide an affordable, engaging program where parents feel welcomed and children feel loved.
Join us for a summer at Dunn!
All of Dunn’s day programs are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and our membership in the Western Association of Independent Camps (WAIC) provide assurances that we meet over 300 high standards regarding health, safety, staffing and program content.
The ACA is a community of camp professionals who, for nearly 100 years, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. ACA accreditation assures parents that a camp has had regular, independent safety audits that go beyond the minimum requirements of the regulations in most states.
Accreditation is different than licensing. Licensing (which is conducted annually by state agencies) focuses on enforcement of minimum regulations and primarily covers sanitation, food service and facilities' safety. Accreditation focuses on education, camper development and quality programming, as well as supporting best practices in all aspects of camp operation. Licensing varies significantly from state to state; the accreditation standards and process are nationally developed, tested and accepted - both by camp professionals and by legal and regulatory authorities. Lastly, while licensing is required and imposed, a camp's accreditation is voluntary.
Camps that are accredited have demonstrated their commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children. This is why we say that ACA accreditation is a parent's best evidence of a camp's commitment to a safe and nurturing environment for children.
Day Camp
For over 20 years, Dunn has been offering our community an exciting Day Camp Program for children 2 years old through 5th Grade. Guided by Sarah Manfrina, Lead Teachers, College and High School Counselors and Counselors-in-Training develop and implement an enriching six-week program. Our counselor : camper ratio’s are unbeatable, 2-3 year olds 1:3, 4-5 year olds 1:4,kindergarten-3rd Grade 1:5, 4th-5th Grade 1:6.
Our camp day is busy and engaging. Campers who are two and three years old have the option of half or full days with a two day per week minimum, while our older campers have three and five full day options to choose from.
Younger campers participate in all activities; older campers get to choose from various arts and/or sports with a daily recreational swim. Lunch and two snacks are offered for campers 4 years old through 5th grade.
Campers and staff have been returning for years. This is the place to see old friends and make new ones, as kids from around the Valley join up together for FUN. Kids enjoy a new theme each week which ties art, crafts, sports, pool time, music, drama, science and field trips together. Field Trips for campers in kindergarten through 5th Grade leave every Thursday for spots throughout Santa Barbara County.

Enrichment
The Dunn campus is an ideal location for the myriad of academic and recreational activities that are offered every summer. Everyone is welcome to attend any program without being a Dunn student. Many of our enrichment offerings are full day, week long explorations into a specific subject. Participants usually have the opportunity for free swim, field trips and meal service.
Many campers decide to take advantage of our After Hours Enrichment programs. These are open to current campers and other members of the Santa Ynez Valley who are not enrolled in regular Dunn Summer Programs. After Hours programs are offered from 3:30-5:00. Classes can be short term, from two or three days in length to as long as several weeks.
Typical Enrichment classes are:
Destination Science, Camp Invention, Photography, Cinematography, Ceramics, Drama-Comedy-Improv, Cooking-Culture-Communication, Multi-Sports Camp, Adventure Camp, ARC Baby-sitting Supercamp, Creative Journaling, Effective Writing, Pre-Algebra and Writing the College Essay.
Typical After Hours Enrichment classes are:

Aquatic
Dunn is proud to be the only Valley location to offer outdoor swim lessons. We maintain a low learner to teacher ratio of 4:1 for all beginner lessons and 5:1 for older kids and more advanced swimmers. Not only that, but our staff are beyond excellent. Tina Kalkowski, Dunn’s Pool Supervisor has been with the program for over 7 years and continues to locate, train and supervise our exemplary instructors and guards.
Class sessions begin as early as May and often continue into September. During June-August, sessions are two weeks in length, meeting Monday through Thursday for approximately 40 minutes. We have found that children are more successful the more they are exposed to water.
Parent & Child: Introduces children, six months and older, to the aquatic environment. This class is designed for participants who need parental support.
Level 1 Water Exploration: Orients to the aquatic environment; creates a foundation for aquatic and safety skills. Participants must be able to sit on the pool stairs without parental support.
Level 2 Primary Skills: Expands on fundamental aquatic locomotion and safety skills.
Level 3 Stroke Readiness: Increases swimming skill competency; practice safety and non-swimming rescue.
Level 4 Stroke Development: Develops confidence and competency in strokes and safety skills beyond preceding levels; introduces Breaststroke, Sidestroke, and surface dives.
Level 5/6 Stroke Refinement & Proficiency: Continues stroke refinement; introduce Butterfly, Springboard Diving and Flip Turns. Gain strength and confidence.
Swim Team- Swimmers improve stroke mechanics and develop a foundation for the sport. To be eligible for swim team, participants must be able to swim 50 yards (back and forth length wise). Skills centered on advanced strokes such as butterfly, backstroke and freestyle.
Dunn School is proud of our partnership with the Buellton Recreation Department in offering Water Aerobics, Lap Swim and Pool Passes to community members.
