Student Life

At Dunn, whether you are a day or boarding student without a doubt you will participate in a busy academic day, starting with jobs after breakfast, and ending with athletics practice every evening. In addition to the academic day, there is much on offer in the way of extracurricular activities both during the day and on weekend. Faculty and students alike share hobbies, interests, and skills with the community to make Dunn a well-rounded place to work and play. This includes numerous clubs, dances and social events, on and off-campus activities and more.

Academic classes are typically held Monday-Friday from 8:15am to 3:20pm. Class length varies depending on the day of the week and the class period's rotation in the daily schedule. Course work is rigorous. Students should anticipate 2-3 hours of outside preparation time each evening. For boarding students, mandatory study hours are scheduled between 7:30pm and 9:30 pm. During these hours students are required to be in their dorm room or they may be assigned to a proctored study hall. In addition, students usually have at least one free period during the academic day, which can be used for class preparation.

School-wide assemblies are held prior to lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. At assemblies teachers and students alike exchange information, make announcements, and generally catch up on current events.

Participation in the after school program is required of all students boarding and day alike. The options for participation during this time are non-competitive sports, interscholastics and drama. See athletics and the arts for more information.

Extracurricular and social activities are somewhat limited by the demands of the academic program. However, the Director of Student Activities coordinates weekend activities with the assistance of a student committee.

Job Program

In Dunn's desire to create a family environment, we expect all students to help maintain the community in which we all live, work, and learn. Students' daily job responsibilities include cleaning the dormitory areas, assisting in the dining hall and participating in daily jobs to clean up around campus and generally pitch-in. Students who are in good academic standing also have the opportunity to work either at the student store on campus or the student cafe.
