Dunn School Athletics
Athletics are an important part of our community in both the Middle School and Upper School. The athletics program reinforces one of Dunn's core values—Physical Readiness—while engaging students in healthy competition, character-building, and teamwork.
All students are required to participate in the athletics program. Some play on competitive team sports while others select more individual focused sports. This ensures that every Dunn student learns lifelong habits of exercise, teamwork, and cooperation.
Athletic accomplishment comes in many shapes and sizes. For some students, nothing short of a state championship is satisfactory. For others, climbing a bolder higher than their head is an athletic feat worth writing home about. Dunn embraces the athletic spectrum and pushes students to be their best physical selves, preparing their bodies for a lifetime of healthy living and activity.
Abu Danladi ’14 exemplifies Dunn's athletic spirit.
A native of Ghana, Abu came to Dunn as a freshman and grew into a soccer-playing phenom – so much so that he was named the Gatorade 2013-2014 National Soccer Player of the Year while leading the Dunn team to a league championship. Abu’s abilities on the field and in the classroom landed him a scholarship to attend UCLA, where he played soccer as well.
After three years at UCLA – and with his Bachelor’s degree within reach – he chose to enter the 2017 Major League Soccer Draft. And on January 13, the Minnesota United team selected Abu as the #1 overall draft pick, citing not only his play on the field but his character and composure off the turf as determining factors.
Abu’s case is exceptional, but his example is exemplary of the level and expectations of athletics at Dunn. Whether a student is pitching to opposing batters, defending lacrosse the net, barreling down a hill on a mountain bike, catching a gnarly wave on a short board, or trying to be the last student standing in the gaga ball pit … we expect big things from our student athletes!
