From Oregon to Los Olivos: Why Kaya Crosby Chose Dunn
Kaya Crosby grew up in the mountains above Ashland, Oregon, a sleepy college town known for its Shakespeare festival and beautiful environs. She never imagined leaving Ashland for high school or attending a boarding school out of state. But when she heard about Dunn School from a friend, she knew she had to check it out.
"I was surprised at how big the campus is," she said about her first trip to Dunn's 55 acres. "It's just so beautiful."
Now in her sophomore year, Kaya participates in a variety of activities. She has been involved in theater, the Interact (community service) Club, peer tutoring, and cross-fit class.
"I like knowing everyone's name. It's nice being in a small environment."
She also co-founded the Birthday Club—"you know, to make people feel special on their birthday," she says with a smile.
In just two years, she says Dunn has made a big difference in her life.
"Who I am has changed a lot," she says. "It's really easy to find friends here. Everyone is kind and inclusive and makes sure you are happy."
"I like knowing everyone's name," she added. "It's nice being in a small environment."
What advice does she have for future boarding students at Dunn? "Don't stay locked up in your room. Participate, and have a positive outlook and everything will be OK."
